Dr. Czarina Behrends is an epidemiologist with qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods analysis experience studying harm reduction, HIV/HCV prevention and treatment, and improving health services delivery for people who use drugs. Dr. Behrends serves as the principal investigator on the HOME study.

Cristina Chin has a social work background and qualitative research experience. She is involved in the administrative and data collection activities of the HOME study and leads qualitative work related to this study.

Winston Luhur is experienced in survey design and implementation, as well as data analysis and management. For the HOME study, Winston works primarily on survey design, implementation, and data analysis.

Hamer Villamizar

Hamer Villamizar’s experience focuses on behavioral research. He has worked in several studies administering social experiments, interviewing participants and gathering data. He is involved in the administrative and data collection activities and will work primarily as the Spanish liaison for the Spanish-speaker participants in the HOME study.

Dr. Aaron Fox has expertise in opioid use disorder and the related problems of HIV, incarceration, and chronic pain. Dr. Fox lends his clinical expertise in addiction medicine to the HOME study research team.

Viraj Patel, MD, MPH

Dr. Viraj Patel is a clinician-investigator and faculty in the primary care/social internal medicine residency program. His research centers around community-engaged approaches to HIV prevention with sexual minority men and gender minority communities within the US, India, and Rwanda. Dr. Patel lends his expertise on best practices for online-based research studies, including HOME.

Corey Davis is an expert on harm reduction law and policy. Corey is leading the policy analysis portion of the HOME study that reviews state-level regulations relevant to mail-based syringe services.

Amy Lieberman has a background in working on critical issues related to the opioid epidemic and promoting harm reduction practices. Amy will work with Corey to provide support on the policy analysis portion of the HOME study.

Dr. Denis Nash’s research background includes extensive domestic and international work in implementation science, epidemiologic methods, comparative effectiveness research and large-scale epidemiologic studies. Dr. Nash lends his expertise to best practices for observational cohort studies, including online-based research studies and leads the study aim on mail-based service preferences for HOME.

Dr. Honoria Guarino has expertise in the development and evaluation of behavioral interventions, especially technology-based interventions, for drug users in urban settings. Dr. Guarino will be lending her expertise, including leading work on understanding mail-based preferences for HOME.
